Teen Vogue: Sia’s film “Music” hurts autistic girls like me

Autistic women and girls are so absent from mainstream culture that ableist and infantilizing representations are often made and rarely challenged. While we celebrate Greta Thunberg for her eloquent environmentalism and hugely successful movement building, we also watch as people demean her achievements, suggesting she couldn’t possibly have her own opinions and must therefore be a puppet for malevolent influences. It is in this context that we must consider the deeply troubling ableist language Sia has used, and her depiction of what amounts to an exoticizing penchant for disabled people.
